Michael Covey is a Managing Director, a Private Wealth Advisor, and a senior leader of the CKWM Group at Merrill Private Wealth Management. The CKWM Group currently manages over $9 billion of assets and liabilities (as of April 2024) for a select group of families.
Michael provides strategic advice and sustained leadership to entrepreneurs, business owners, and other wealth creators, accompanying them through the lifecycle of their businesses and beyond. With more than 25 years of experience addressing the needs of ultra-high-net-worth clients, he helps families distill the issues that can help them do more with their wealth, for themselves and their loved ones: pre-liquidity-event planning, investing, wealth strategy, next-generation wealth transfer, cash-flow, and insurance, among others. Michael brings integrity and loyalty to the clients he serves, leading the team’s “virtual family office,” which serves as a single, strategic resource for multiple generations of client families.
Throughout his career, Michael has focused on the needs of ultra-high-net-worth clients, particularly those of business owners and entrepreneurs. Prior to joining Merrill Private Wealth Management in 2017, he was a Managing Director and Private Wealth Manager with UBS Private Wealth Management, where he served for more than nine years. Earlier, he held parallel roles with Lehman Brothers Private Wealth Management, where he met fellow team leaders Tom Kane and Mark Wiktor.
Before transitioning to wealth management in 1999, Michael worked for Ernst & Young as a Certified Public Accountant in its Tax and Audit Group. His career also includes experience with Diversified Financial Management Corp., where he was involved with the accounting and tax strategies for many of the entities owned by the Pritzker Family Business Interests. Michael earned his B.S.B.A. in Accounting from John Carroll University.
Michael is deeply involved in a number of civic and charitable organizations. He serves on the Board of Directors for John Carroll University and as a Director for the Western Golf Association/Evans Scholars Foundation. He served as the 125th President of the Union League Club of Chicago and has been a trustee of the Union League Club’s Boys and Girls Clubs since 2000.
Michael and his wife, Jennifer, have two adult children: a daughter, Alexis, and a son, Frank. In his free time, he enjoys playing golf, boating, cooking, and wine collecting.

Tom Kane is a Managing Director, Private Wealth Advisor, and a senior leader of the CKWM Group at Merrill Private Wealth Management. Tom has focused on the needs of ultra-high-net-worth clients throughout his career. Prior to CKWM joining Merrill Private Wealth Management in 2017, he served as a Private Wealth Manager and Managing Director with UBS. Earlier, he held parallel roles at Lehman Brothers, where he met fellow team leaders Michael Covey and Mark Wiktor and formed The CKWM Group. Tom’s career also includes a tenure in investment management with a prominent Chicago-based family office. He was selected for the First Scholar Program at First Chicago NBD Bank (now J.P. Morgan) and earned his M.B.A. with a concentration in Finance and Accounting from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. He is a graduate of Drake University, where he was a member of the football team.
Tom commits significant time and resources to his philanthropic interests, which include the FIDF, Western Golf Association, JUF, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and the Pilot Light Foundation.
Keenly interested in art and design, Tom enjoys sharing these passions with fellow enthusiasts. An avid golfer, he also likes to travel to diverse destinations and explore new cultures and cuisines.
Mark is a Private Wealth Advisor and Managing Director at Merrill Private Wealth Management Chicago and focuses on “liquid market” strategies while managing all of the transactional business for the team. Mark’s career in Private Wealth Management started with Lehman Brothers in 1992 where he began honing his knowledge in equities and liquid markets. From Lehman, he and his current business partners took their burgeoning Private Wealth practice to UBS Private Wealth Management, and have since grown the business into a leading private wealth practice in the Midwest. Mark has been recognized as a top advisor in the country, being named to the Forbes “Best-in-State Wealth Advisors” list in 2022(Published on April 7, 2022. Rankings based on data as of June 30, 2021), by Barron's as one of the Top 1,000 Financial Advisors in the U.S. in 2012 and 2013(Published annually in February. Joanne has been with Merrill for 10 years and is a Senior Private Wealth Planner for the CKWM Group. Joanne works closely with our families to create personalized wealth strategies that support their goals and objectives. After obtaining her CFP™ certification her focus has been working closely with each member of the team to help design unique strategies for wealth accumulation and wealth transfer. Taking the time to understand the individual, their family, values and goals, Joanne helps to tailor appropriate solutions to fit their needs and to help them advance their long- and short-term investment goals.
In her spare time, she enjoys reading, traveling, staying active and spending time with her family. Joanne lives with her husband, two year old daughter, newborn son, and English bulldog in the western suburbs.
Joanne graduated from Columbia College with a bachelor’s degree in finance and earned her Series 7, 66 & 24 FINRA registrations.
Alexandra joined the Covey Kane Wiktor group in June of 2021 following an eight year career in leadership with Merrill.
Prior to joining the team, she was the Private Wealth Market Supervision Manager for the Mid America Private Wealth Region.
As a Senior Private Wealth Planner, her objective is to help our clients with tailored strategies in order to gain clarity around their plans as it relates to their goals and values. Alexandra holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sales and Marketing from Babes Bolyai University in Cluj Napoca, Romania and a MBA in Finance and Entrepreneurship from University at Illinois at Chicago. Alexandra also holds the Certified Private Wealth Advisor and the Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor designations. Alexandra is a member of the Women’s Exchange in Chicago. Alexandra currently resides in Elmhurst and in her free time she enjoys playing chess, running and traveling.
Jerry joined the team from the Merrill home office where he spent ten years assisting financial advisors transition their businesses into the firm from outside of the organization. Prior to his transition management role, Jerry handled problem resolution for Merrill private wealth clients as well as managed an electronic manufacturing company in Reno, Nevada where he and his family have resided for the last decade. Jerry and his family enjoy outdoor activities including surfing, snowboarding, hiking, running and mountain bike riding.
Michael joined The CKWM Group in 2018 following nine years supporting Bank of America and Merrill. Prior to joining the team, he held roles in executive reporting and data analytics for Bank of America’s consumer operations division along with the Merrill Mid-America division headquarters. His primary responsibilities with The CKWM Group are portfolio construction, relationship management, manager due diligence, and client performance reporting, while providing diligent and detailed client service.
Michael currently is the President of the Friends of Morton charitable organization and volunteers at his church and other community events regularly. In his free time, he enjoys playing tennis, golf and coaching little league baseball. Michael resides in the Tri-Taylor neighborhood of Chicago with his wife and daughter.
Michael earned a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership & Supervision, along with an entrepreneurship certificate from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Josh began his career with Merrill in 2006 as a Priority One representative on the Mutual Funds & Money Markets Help Desk. Most recently (prior to joining The CKWM Group) Josh was a senior specialist for the Transition Management Team where he spent 10 years assisting hundreds of financial advisors transition their businesses to Merrill Lynch. He became an expert in client onboarding and account opening across multiple platforms. Josh developed transfer best practices for many competitor firms and was instrumental in training the new teams on the Merrill platforms to ensure a seamless transition. Most importantly, he gained years of experience in managing available resources to best support the transitions in his care. In his current role, Josh handles client onboarding along with all aspects of account administration and service.
Josh (a Florida native), his wife Emily and their three children currently reside in Jacksonville, FL.
Ioana joined The CKWM Group in August of 2022 after time at PNC Bank and over 10 years of customer service experience in the hospitality industry. Prior to joining CKWM, she held roles in management and event planning at Oxford Capital Group Hotels. As a Private Wealth Client Associate, Ioana provides overall administrative support to the team, manages client servicing requests, and handles the day-to-day needs of a large hyper functioning PWM team in an efficient and effective manner. Ioana plays a fundamental role in assisting clients and families with brokerage and personal banking services and enjoys helping facilitate any of their private wealth needs.
Ioana holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance from University of Illinois in Chicago. She currently resides in Glenview and in her free time she enjoys biking, skiing, hiking, volunteering at charity events (WIP, USO, or For the Love of chocolate) and spending time with her family.
